A smart and mad dance piece with someone who is a puppet himself: a little vivified man.
Name: Freeman
Height: 35 cm or smaller
Shoe size: 5 cm
Viciousness: enormous
Is he friendly? Not really…

- Morgan, how would you describe this little man?
- When I first met him he seemed to be a nice little bloke, but then… He is very lively, what's more somewhat vicious. He is very eager to look for reasons to nag me and he really enjoys it. Surely, I'll not take this for long,
I might need to kill him out. I'll have no choice unless he changes. He? Changes? NEVER. He is up to something.
I know. And I have not talked about his friend, the rabbit yet.

REVIEWS OF THE PERFORMANCE

Horeczky Krisztina
Népszabadság / Budapest

This illusory story is performed by this one-hour grotesque, which is at least as mischievous, playful, witty, and has a lively sense of humor, as it is dark, painful and cruel. In particular: it is courageous. The monodance mixed with the puppet show reminded me of the state of being when a preschool child dreams about an imaginary friend. This buddy – be it an invisible creature or a doll, plush toy, etc. – is not only a comforter and a comrade, but also a demonic alter ego. That is the dark side of the kid's personality, who controls, manipulates, and commands. It is addictive.
The internationally renowned self-taught dancer and choreographer is the best performer of the contemporary national dance-scene, whose original genius cannot be accustomed to. It is startling, shocking, and upsetting. Not only because of his unrelenting, reserved, honest and very direct personality refusing all routine, but also thanks to the closed, isolated, lonely cosmos into which he plunges the spectator. In addition to the well expected special presence: the technical, strong, sometimes virtuous eurhythmics which is elaborated to the smallest gestures was based on the music composed by Fehér, who was inspired by René Aubry.

Running- that is, escaping from our familiar world to the other part of the world where everything is unfamiliar and unexplored. To make the choreography by integrating these impressions and influences. Our lifestyle is rather fast, and it is difficult to slow down.
This performance is based on rhythmical changes, the performers' dynamics and on precise co-operation.

Efforts to capture hearts, heads bouncing on the floor, flashes of nudity... Four man.
A team or brothers? Who's with who, who's against who, who is who?
Together or separately? How to get in and how to get out?
Who can claim to be a brother?
Petty desires and attempts, life-death struggles for nothing.
Poses. And what's with dignity?

Virtuose Gewalt

„It's quite rude to collect information about Tao on Wikipedia. Just like adding philosophic interest to a contemporary dance choreography by it's title. It is not what makes the opus interesting but the fact, that Fehér arrives with a street-dance style turn on one hand and is still able to finish it with a lyrical arm-movement … that Dózsa keeps kicking his head without touching it while Fehér twitches to the rhythm with such harmony like he really was kicking him … that said or unsaid, a kind of story or moral lesson can be seen on the stage, or at least a piece of referential reality occurs, and each scenic action becomes experiencable without explanation by grasping it.

Tao Te by Hungarian dancer-choreographer Ferenc Fehér, is darker and somewhat less accessible, a counterpoint to the first. It opens with a surreal, almost post-apocalyptic picnic scene, featuring two mute, suited men. In a complex, tautly choreographed duet, the pair seem to explore notions of struggle, competition, freedom and confinement. The use of martial arts in their movements is impressive, if sometimes lacking in grace and precision; the tone is predominately one of machismo and combat, which grew a little monotonous by the end. Though there is some exploration of the inevitable by-products of the representation of this relationship – homoeroticism and homosociality – this was only hinted at, and not fully developed. It is a powerful piece though, if not always completely coherent.

By Hungarian choreographer Ferenc Fehérʼs dark and intense ʻTao Teʼ. Using harsh spotlights to create ominous shadows, one minute the performers are fighting aggressively against each other, the next moving smoothly together like an industrial machine. The electronic soundscape, with its metallic droning, pulsating dance beats, melodic chords and primitive drumming, creates an immersive sense of foreboding unease throughout.

Ferenc Fehér at the Vancouver International Dance Festival

One of the great things about the Vancouver International Dance Festival are the free 7 pm shows that artistic producers Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi have always programmed in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall ahead of the 8 pm ticketed auditorium shows. Far from mere curtain raisers, these are fully realized shows featuring local, Canadian, and international artists. Last night Hungary's Ferenc Fehér was the featured attraction.

Tao Te is a duet for Fehér and fellow dancer Balázs Szitás, a physical meditation on being by way of the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and Lao Tsu (who are both quoted in the program notes). It begins with Fehér and Szitás seated cross-legged on the stage, looking out at the audience contemplatively. A loaf of crusty bread lies on a towel between them. One of the men picks up a bit of bread and begins to chew; the other man follows suit. Soon they both do a quarter turn inward on their sits bones so they are facing each other across the bread. They continue to eat and chew, until there is only one large piece of bread remaining. One of the men makes a sudden grab for the bread and this is the cue for the kinetic brinksmanship to move from mere mastication to dance as full-on (and full-bodied) contact sport. For over the next thirty minutes the dancers will: throw their bodies repeatedly--and with apparent abandon of both gravity and pain--at each other, and onto the stage floor; accelerate into barrel roles that stop just short of the two massive wooden poles around which the Exhibition Hall stage has been constructed; race each other on all fours to the edge of the stage; and circle warily before facing off against each other like boxers in a ring.

That the dancers weren't holding anything back became clear to me when, during a sequence in which the men remove their suit jackets and shirts, I saw from my vantage point in the front row a bloody cut on one of their elbows. And yet there are also moments in the piece that are downright tender, as when, having slipped back into their jackets, the dancers mirror each other in a simple two-step, traversing the stage in a manner that, though they never touch, approximates a waltz.

Indeed, to the extent that each man represents to the other both an acknowledgement of and a threat to his being, a support and an encumbrance, a force of forward momentum and an impediment to movement full stop, I couldn't help thinking of Fehér and Szitás as the Didi and Gogo of dance-theatre. Albeit with a lot more energy.

"For Ferenc Fehér dance has always been the medium for sensual directness. The direct experience of being close to nature. The movements tuned to music, the body focused on its own laws become a plaything, a medium for inner powers. The sand furrows are the furrows on our faces, the desert is our genuine reflection." Immortality, infinite emptiness, total loneliness.
No emotions.
